Chapter Nine

Meg couldn’t move. She felt weighed down. No not weighed, tied. She was tied down.

Remembering the landing spaceship and terrifyingly bad costumed aliens, she began struggling violently against her restraints. She jerked every part of her body she could get to move, trying to break free. She screamed, even before her eyes opened.

“You are safe.” A voice tried to penetrate her frantic thoughts. Meg felt a cool hand on her arm and tensed. She breathed heavily.

Her eyes darted around, trying to focus but unable to stop on any one object long enough to figure out what was happening. The metal room had round lights, and grates, and protrusions. What she took to be paint shimmered and changed like an electronic billboard. None of the languages looked familiar, even the lettering didn’t appear to be human except for some Egyptian hieroglyphs. Finally, English appeared, and she read, “Welcome to Galaxy Alien Mail Order Brides, where we are joining hearts across the universes.”

Aliens. Brides. Abduction. Blue. Frost. Spaceship.

Her thoughts were a stream of random words as she tried to construct a coherent notion of what was happening. Her body tingled, especially her back. She vaguely remembered hearing a blast before nothing. Had they shot her?

Spaceship abduction.

No, this couldn’t be happening. She needed to get home to her father.

Her entire body shook violently.

“I’m going to unstrap your head.” Frost leaned forward, coming into her view. She heard metal clang and felt her weight shift in the seat as the ship moved. He unstrapped her head and then loosened the ties holding her arms and chest.

“Where?” she managed, the sound barely making it out of her mouth. “Who? What? Where?”

“I’m Frost. Don’t you remember me?”

“He’s your husband,” another voice added. She couldn’t see the bearer. “Congratulations!”

Meg’s throat tightened, and she squeaked instead of talked.

“We were just discussing how long it will be until you have offspring,” the voice continued.

“Don’t listen to him.” Frost kept his face in front of hers, blocking her view. “We’re not married, and I’m not trying to impregnate you.”

Those words should have caused her some relief. Instead, Meg was almost disappointed. She blinked hard, trying to focus her vision so she could better study his face. Ice-blue eyes met hers. The skin tone didn’t bother her. She supposed it should have, but it didn’t.

“I don’t care that you’re blue,” she said softly.

“I don’t care that you’re not blue,” he answered.

“I didn’t mean for you two to make the baby now, in front of me. Don’t worry. I won’t peek. Go ahead,” the other voice said.

“Shut up, Bob,” Frost ordered.

“I’m Gary.”

“Shut up, Gary,” Meg said, not taking her eyes from Frost’s.

His expression calmed her, and as she regained some of her faculties, she was able to force herself to concentrate on facts.

Fact one: her father was right, she leapt before thinking way too often.

Fact two: she was on a spaceship with aliens.

Fact three: she was sexually attracted to a blue man who liked hockey and came from…

“Where did you say you are from?” she asked.
